Brewery Martens acquired United Dutch Breweries
Brewery Martens, Belgium’s largest family-owned brewery, acquired United Dutch Breweries (UDB) from GIMV and management.
Brewery Martens, founded in 1758 and headquartered in Bocholt, Belgium, combines centuries of brewing tradition with cutting-edge sustainable production practices. Martens produces over 4 million hectolitres of beer annually, distributing to more than 100 countries.
United Dutch Breweries, founded in 1538, has a rich legacy as one of the first breweries to export Dutch beer worldwide. Known for its affordable premium beers, UDB has built an extensive global presence, shipping its proprietary brands worldwide. Since Gimv’s investment in 2015, UDB had evolved into a growth-driven organization with a focus on innovation.
This strategic partnership aligns two storied brewing companies, bringing together Martens’ state-of-the-art production capabilities and UDB’s strong brand portfolio and global market reach. The acquisition marks an important milestone for both companies, fostering growth opportunities and enhancing sustainability efforts in the global beer industry.
Gimv’s representatives, along with Martens’ executive director Jan Martens, highlight the exceptional synergy potential of the acquisition, as it brings together UDB’s branding expertise and global distribution network with Martens’ efficient, quality-driven production capabilities. Together, the companies are positioned for sustainable growth and a promising future.
“Over the years, Clairfield in Belgium has gained the position as trusted financial advisor of Brewery Martens, where this transaction marks as yet another milestone in our continous relationship to support their impressive growth trajectory,” said Hans Buysse, managing partner at Clairfield in Belgium.
Clairfield International acted as exclusive financial advisor to Brouwerij Martens.
